Since Ricky's in SoHo opened up with some more indie, website-based brands, I have not walked by once without dropping in. My first visit prompted my first Coloured Raine purchase! Coloured Raine's line of Matte Lip Paints have some of your everyday shades but there is a bunch that cater to people who don't like average lippie shades. I was so excited about most of the colors but I decided to calm down and purchase one to test out the formula. I chose 'Soul', which I think is a universal shade that looks great, yet different, on every skin tone.
The liquid lipstick is packaged in a traditional clear plastic tube with a hot pink cap. The applicator is a typical doe foot applicator. Each lip paint retails for $17, which I can see being a bit on the high side for some. Some of the shades in the range are extremely dupe-able, but I would say that this price tag for a unique shade is reasonable to me.
The formula is very comfortable to wear and goes on without issue. With all the liquid lipsticks on the market at the moment, I feel Iike I should do a comparison for those who own a couple. For me, the formula is less comfortable than the Jeffree Star and ColourPop liquid lipsticks but is more comfortable to wear than LASplash and Gerard Cosmetics liquid lipsticks. The Colored Raine liquid lipstick sets to a completely flat matte so there is some drying, this is typical of super matte lippies but I would put this formula on the more drying side. I wear it over lip balm for the best feel throughout the day. It wears well up to 7 hours on me through a full day and layering it doesn't seem to accentuate dryness.
The only issue I had with the wear time of this liquid lipstick is that the application process is nice and easy but it starts to feather around the outside of my lips and fade there only, so it doesn't look too great after that. A lot of people might not notice or have this issue and it becomes much less of a problem for me when I use any lip liner before applying.
'Soul' is described as a "grayish brown with a slight purple undertone" and it is the most beautiful shade. I was surprised at how few shades I could find to dupe it with because this seems right up my alley. A large part of the selection Coloured Raine has seems so different than anything else out there, which is why I'm so interested in trying other shades. 'Soul' photographs very purple-ish on me but it leans a little more on the grey side in person. It is slightly darker on the skin than in the tube.
These are a couple dupes I could find for 'Soul'. I believe MAC's 'Stone' is very close as well if you would like to try a matte lipstick shade that isn't as drying. NYX's 'Maison' is another matte lipstick that is similar but is not nearly as drying.
Overall, I am loving this shade and I want to try more of Coloured Raine's shade range. Some might have issues with the drying or feathering but the simple fixes don't bother me. It is not my favorite formula or overall liquid lipstick but It's pretty high on the list. You can purchase the Matte Lip Paints on ColouredRaine.com or RickysNYC.com.
